Why it matters
Local leadership matters
Beach Management Units help fishers organise, speak with one voice, and take part in decisions that affect daily life on the water.
We work alongside BMUs to build confidence in governance, strengthen local by-laws, and support practical planning that reflects local knowledge, shared priorities, and the realities of the coast.

How we support BMUs
Support that builds confidence
Our approach is practical, participatory, and rooted in the experience of fishers, BMU leaders, and coastal communities.
Governance skills
We help BMU members strengthen leadership, record keeping, meeting processes, and clear roles so groups can work well together.
By-laws and rules
We support BMUs to review or develop local by-laws that are understood by members and grounded in local needs.
Participatory planning
We create space for fishers, women, youth, and other local voices to shape priorities, actions, and shared responsibilities.
Representation and action
We help BMUs engage with partners, speak up in wider forums, and make and enforce local management decisions with greater confidence.
Work with coastal leaders
If you want to support stronger community-led fisheries management, we would love to hear from you.
We welcome conversations with community groups, partners, and supporters who value local leadership on Kenya’s coast.
