Sea Turtle Conservation
Nest Monitoring & Beach Protection
Night after night, community monitors walk the beaches to protect nesting turtles and their eggs — rooted in care, rising with every successful hatch.

Community-led care
Protecting nesting beaches
Nesting beaches on Kenya’s North Coast are critical for sea turtle survival. Pwani Bora works with local community monitors, rangers, and partners to protect nests through regular patrols, careful monitoring, and rapid response when nests are at risk.
This work is community-led in close collaboration with Kenya Wildlife Service and Beach Management Units, with Watamu and nearby nesting beaches at the heart of the effort.

How the work happens
From patrol to hatch
Each step is practical, steady, and rooted in local knowledge so that nests are protected with care from the moment a turtle comes ashore to the moment hatchlings reach the sea.
Beach Patrols
Community monitors walk nesting beaches, especially at night and early morning, to spot turtle activity, record signs of nesting, and respond quickly when support is needed.
Nest Protection
When nests are found, monitors help mark, safeguard, and keep watch over them, reducing disturbance and acting fast if tides, predators, or human activity put eggs at risk.
Hatchling Monitoring
As hatchlings begin to emerge, teams track outcomes, note what is happening on the beach, and help create the safest possible path from nest to ocean.
Community Monitors at the Centre
Local monitors and rangers are the heart of this work. Their presence, knowledge of the coastline, and long-term commitment make protection possible season after season.
Why it matters
Protecting more than nests
Nest protection supports the recovery of sea turtle populations and helps keep nesting beaches healthy for the long term.
It also strengthens local stewardship of the coastline, linking the care of turtles with the wider wellbeing of beaches, nearshore habitats, and coastal families.
Together, this contributes to a thriving coast where ocean and people rise together — with natural connections to habitat care, fisher partnerships, and broader marine conservation.
Collaboration
Working side by side
Pwani Bora works alongside Kenya Wildlife Service, local Beach Management Units, and community members to keep nest protection practical, trusted, and grounded in local responsibility.
