Sea Turtle Conservation
Community Guardians & Capacity Building
The strongest protection for the coast comes from the people who live with it every day.
Introduction
Rooted in local leadership
Lasting conservation depends on skilled, motivated local people who know the beaches, tides, and communities of Kenya’s Coast. Pwani Bora works to train, support, and stand alongside community guardians, monitors, youth, and local leaders so that care for sea turtles stays grounded in the places where it matters most.
By investing in people as much as programmes, we help build confidence, practical knowledge, and long-term stewardship that can keep growing from one season to the next.

Capacity Building
What capacity building looks like
Our approach is practical, relational, and designed to leave useful skills within the community.
Training monitors and rangers
We equip community monitors and beach rangers with the knowledge and confidence to patrol, record observations, respond to turtle sightings, and care for nesting beaches.
Supporting BMUs and leaders
We work alongside Beach Management Units and local leaders to strengthen coordination, shared decision-making, and locally grounded action for the coast.
Youth and school engagement
Young people are invited into conservation through school activities, beach learning, and hands-on experiences that make stewardship feel close to home.
Peer learning between communities
Communities learn from one another by sharing experiences, practical ideas, and lessons that can travel across beaches and landing sites.
Practical skills that stay
From monitoring methods to community outreach, the skills developed through this work remain with local people long after a single project cycle ends.
Respectful partnership
Every training and exchange is built on listening, mutual respect, and the belief that local people are the long-term guardians of the coastline.
Why It Matters
Why local guardians matter

Stand with local guardians
Help strengthen community-led care for sea turtles and the wider coastline by supporting local training, youth engagement, and long-term stewardship.
